Phil has 30 years of industry experience in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Fate Sciences. Phil has dedicated his career to analysis using chromatography and spectrometry techniques to provide support to healthcare and environmental science industries.

In 1994 Phil accepted a position at Smith and Nephew Research Centre at York Science Park. The research centre consisted of five scientific disciplines: Polymer Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Biological Sciences and Production. Phil’s new responsibilities were to provide analytical data to support the research and development of novel medical devices. Smith and Nephew provided funding to support his education for a BSc in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry from Huddersfield Metropolitan University. Phil’s final year project was entitled: Development and validation of a method for the determination of residual itaconic anhydride in light switch-able pressure sensitive adhesives.

Phil expanded his knowledge of analytical techniques to include Gas Chromatography (GC), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Infra‑red Spectroscopy. Projects were diverse in nature, ranging from controlled release antimicrobial coated polymers, bio‑degradable polymeric implants for Orthopaedic applications and smart electronic implants. Working in a research environment allowed Phil to build expertise in new emerging commercial technologies such as rapid chromatography and further developments in LC-MS.

More about chemical regulation

Regulations and restrictions on the use of chemicals to tackle plant and animal pests and diseases are becoming increasingly stringent, which means the range of chemical options available for tackling these threats is constantly being eroded. It’s essential to ensure that any chemicals used in the environment do not pose a threat to plants, wildlife and ecosystems, while ensuring they are effective against target pests and diseases.
