Mark Harrison

Mark is the Authenticity and Novel foods Team Manager at Fera. He is the lead operative of our two Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers and has utilised this technology for profiling a wide variety of plant, food and biological samples for markers of various stresses, authenticity and disease. The Authenticity and Novel foods team operate a range of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, both targeted and non-targeted, for analytical problem solving and authenticity confirmation within the food sector from farm to fork.

Mark co-ordinates the delivery of Fera’s Food Authenticity and Novel Foods services with clients from both government and industry bodies. The team offer a variety of analytical testing in areas such as meat speciation, allergen detection, gelatine origin and honey and wine authenticity. His team has recently introduced a suite of tests to assess the quality, safety and composition of CBD products and medicinal cannabis. Current work includes safety and nutritional analysis of alternative protein sources particularly derived from insects.

Mark has been involved in a number of research programmes most notably ABSTRESS (Improving the resistance of legume crops to combined abiotic and biotic stress) where he spent time in France (INRA, Dijon) developing methods for the profiling of legume leaves and roots for markers of drought stress and disease and TRACE (Tracing Food Commodities in Europe) delivering training courses in wine and honey analysis. Mark has expertise in isotope ratio analysis with over 18 years’ experience overseeing Fera’s capabilities in this area. He has represented the UK as the technical expert for analytical control within the EU wine sector and trained new member state laboratories in specialist isotopic techniques (Site Specific Natural Isotope Fractionation SNIF-NMR).
