Liam is the LC-MS/MS team and Thomson suite manager at Fera. As team manager, his role is to ensure the efficient deliver of results for around 100,000 samples a year analysed by LC-MS/MS, from food safety to environmental fate.

Liam oversees the Mass Spec team and Thomson suite at Fera. As the team manager, his role is to ensure the efficient delivery of results for around 100,000 samples a year, covering a large area of analysis from food safety to environmental fate by various Mass Spec technologies. The team utilises a range of different Mass Spec instrumentation, including Waters TQS to Agilent 9495c with 23 instruments in total. Much of the work delivered is routine surveillance for veterinary medicines, pesticides, mycotoxins & environmental fate but they are also equipped and experienced in dealing with more complex & bespoke R&D work.
Liam has worked at Fera for over 15 years starting as a laboratory assistant in 2007 with the Veterinary Medicines team. Moving into the role of assistant analytical chemist from 2008 to 2013, Liam started work in the food contact materials area and had the opportunity to move around the food program delivering on specific projects in Mycotoxins, Metals and Trace Elements as well as Food Authenticity team.
Liam subsequently spent a year working in the organic environment contaminants team, then moving into a role within the LCMS team where he worked for 4 years before finally stepping into a managerial role at the end of this period. Over the last 5 years Liam has overseen changes in processes within the team that have improved efficiency and capacity levels aiding business growth.
With the food industry increasingly subject to scrutiny, testing to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, protecting public health and supporting traceability is a must.
