Charles is a Plant Health Consultant at Fera. He studied for his Ph.D. on a fungal parasite of the cultivated mushroom working closely with industry to understand a new and emerging disease called cobweb mould.

Charles has spent the past 20 years identifying fungal plant diseases both indigenous and alien to the UK. He leads Fera’s work on citizen science developing capability and capacity in stakeholders, NGOs and members of the public about plant health and biosecurity. He is a Royal Society Biology Senior Plant Health Professional and a member of the Arboricultural Association.
Charles has been involved in large European projects investigating diseases such as strawberry blackspot and Monilinia Brown rot of top fruit in addition to projects funded by the HDC concerning mushroom pathogens, fungal diseases of berry fruit including blackcurrant, blueberry and vines in addition to evaluating the efficacy of seed treatments for botrytis neck rot. Charles is Fera’s lead on citizen science projects such as Observatree, OPAL and The International Plant Sentinel Network (IPSN). He is also responsible for leading work for Defra and the Government Office of Science on ‘Inspiring the Next Generation of Plant Health Scientists' working with organisations such as the Royal Society Biology, Gatsby funded Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS) and the University York Science Education Group.
Fera offers a suite of crop health services, resources, testing facilities and expertise to help farmers, growers and the food industry to improve yields, reduce costs and develop sustainable solutions.
