A sample of willow-carrot aphids collected from Cow Parsley in North Yorkshire by Larissa Collins in May 2014 have been found to be resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin by Steve Foster (Rothamsted Research), while screening aphid samples for an AHDB funded project.

The aphids were maintained on carrot in a glasshouse at Fera for the Crop Health and Protection Centre (CHAP). The aphids survived doses of lambda-cyhalothrin.

Willow-carrot aphids cause feeding damage to carrots and transmit yield and quality reducing viruses. This is also something for seed potato growers to take into consideration: willow-carrot aphid transmits PVY and PVA 50% as efficiently as Myzus persicae and occurs in large flights early in the year when the potato plants are young and susceptible to virus transmission.
