New courses throw the spotlight on food safety, security and packaging

Organisations and individuals working in the food supply chain will be able to tap into new advances and expertise in food and drink packaging, thanks to a new course developed by the Institute for Agri-Food Research and Innovation (IAFRI), a joint venture between Newcastle University and Fera Science Ltd (Fera).

The part-time (24 month) Food Packaging PG Cert course, starting at Newcastle University in September, and the short Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course, ‘Current Issues in Food Safety, Security and Packaging’, which will run for three days from Tuesday 18th September to 20th Thursday September 2018 will focus on current issues in food safety, security and packaging.

New Courses

The courses will help packaging technologists and developers, production supervisors and organisations or individuals working on food packaging projects to develop knowledge of current and novel materials used for food and beverage packaging and analytical procedures for quality control and regulatory compliance as well as helping them to gain an understanding of the drivers for sustainability and circular economy.

Candidates will gain valuable insight into recent advances in science and technology that have applications to food and drink packaging. The three day course will include an assessment and can provide the foundation for further study, leading to the award of PG Cert in Food Packaging. Candidates not wishing to undertake further study (distance learning) and formal assessment can choose to attend the first two days of the course. If successful in the assessment candidates will receive transferable academic credits (CAT points) that can contribute to future qualifications.

The courses will include presentations from key industry figures in packaging safety and regulation.
