New apprentices join the Fera team.

In September 2019, three new apprentices joined the Plant team at Fera. During their two years in the Plant Protection Programme (PPP) they will gain a Level 4 HNC in Applied Biology, a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship, as well as a wealth of experience in the diagnostic teams of the PPP. Fera is committed to retaining local talent in North Yorkshire, so we’re delighted that all three of our new recruits attended schools and 6th forms in York (Huntington School , All Saints RC School, Tadcaster Grammar/York College).

Callum has shared his experience so far:

Apprentice Laboratory Assistant | Plant Protection Programme | Fera

1. Tell us why you have applied for this apprenticeship at Fera Science.
I applied for my apprenticeship at Fera because of the vast amount of knowledge and experience I would gain and the limitless opportunities that I would be exposed to during my apprenticeship. Unlike other science-based apprenticeships Fera place you in multiple teams with a 6 month rotation enabling me to experience various aspects of the Plant Protection Programme which in turn allows me to gain crucial lab skills in different areas.

2. The training for the apprenticeship includes undertaking qualifications while working full time, and may at times be demanding. How are you looking to organise yourself to balance your study and job?

Using my college day affectively will be key to ensuring that I keep on top of my college work as the work is designed to be completed during my time there. If workload increases and becomes too demanding I would speak to my line manager and organise some time at work whereby I can complete or expand upon my college work to obtain the highest possible grade.

3. Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

I hope that by completing the apprenticeship it will lead to a career in science and that I will find and pursue an area of interest within biology.

4. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you are settling in to Fera life.

I previously studied at York College doing A Levels Maths, Ancient History and Biology; during my time at college my passion for Biology was enhanced and led me to apply for the apprenticeship at Fera Science. Going straight from college into full time job was a big step for me since I would be working in a new environment but all the people at Fera are lovely and have made me feel very welcome.
