Fera food testing experts perform accurate iodine analysis on food and feed samples to provide insights into the quality and safety of your foodstuffs.
Iodine is a trace element that is essential for health which is naturally present in some foods, and may be added to others to increase levels present. Levels of iodine consumption are directly linked to a range of health issues, most notably thyroid conditions Eating foods rich in iodine ensures that the thyroid is able to control metabolism, detoxification, growth and development. However, there is a safe threshold amount and if iodine intakes are excessive, excess iodine can cause damage to the thyroid.
Fera’s food safety experts are ideally placed to provide detailed insights into the levels of iodine within your food/ feed and also clinical samples. The ISO17025 accredited method we use involves first homogenising samples, to ensure uniform results, followed by heating a portion with alkali prior to analysis by ICP-MS.
