Small water-soaked spots are the first symptoms observed on leaves and appear following infection. These enlarge and the centre becomes necrotic and brown.
The disease can be spread by planting infected seed with plants showing lesions on the cotyledon or primary leaves. It can also be spread in infected plant debris. Many bean species are affected, including runner beans, lima beans, peas and cowpeas.
